Flora of the Chagos Archipelago: A conservation checklist of native and introduced plant species - Version 1.15

<para>This checklist presents a curated inventory of the vascular plant species of the Chagos Archipelago, British Indian Ocean Territory. It includes native, introduced, invasive, and cultivated taxa, based on literature review, herbarium specimens, and recent field surveys. Species are annotated with establishment status, island distribution and life form. The dataset contributes to improved knowledge of plant biodiversity in remote island ecosystems and provides a baseline for conservation management and restoration planning.</para>

La nomenclature suit World Flora Online, à quelques exceptions près. Un ou plusieurs synonymes sont fournis lorsqu’une espèce est traitée sous un nom différent dans la Flore d’Afrique centrale, World Flora Online ou Plants of the World Online, ou lorsque le nom accepté a change récemment.</para> <para> [EN] The checklist is based on a comprehensive review of the literature, herbarium collections, and online databases. It comprises 10,255 species (385 Pteridophytes, 16 Gymnosperms, and 9,854 Angiosperms) that are either native to the Democratic Republic of the Congo or introduced and recorded outside cultivation. Cultivated species, as well as infraspecific taxa and hybrids, are excluded. For each species, the checklist provides information on family, status (native or introduced), life form (tree, liana, shrub or suffrutex, herb, epiphytic herb, epiphytic shrub, epiphytic parasite), and endemism. 1098 species are strict endemics of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Species occurrence is confirmed by references to the Flore d’Afrique centrale (in which specimens are cited), by other taxonomic literature citing specimens from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or by herbarium specimens with verified identifications. Species known solely from a destroyed type specimen are excluded. Nomenclature follows World Flora Online, with a few exceptions. One or more synonyms are provided when a species is treated under a different name in the Flore d’Afrique centrale, World Flora Online, or Plants of the World Online, or when the accepted name has changed recently.</para>

<para>Meise Botanic Garden (MeiseBG) has a history that goes back to 1796. Today, it is an internationally recognized botanic garden in a park of 92 hectares, and a centre of excellence for plant biodiversity research. MeiseBG houses the 15th largest herbarium in the world, holding 4 million preserved specimens, a comprehensive botanical library, a seed bank and a living plant collection with 25,000 accessions of plants from around the world. Research focuses on plant, algal and fungal taxonomy, evolution, biodiversity conservation, ecosystems and ethnobotany. The preserved collections (including the herbarium, wood, carpological, slide and molecular collections) have a global scope, with a focus on Central Africa, Belgium, and Southwestern Europe, with additionally important historic collections from Latin America. Highlights are the private collections of famous 19th botanists such as Henri Van Heurck (diatoms), Carl Von Martius (Flora brasiliensis), Heinrich Gustav von Reichenbach (orchids) and Crépin (wild roses), which form the historic core of the collections. A wide range of taxonomic groups are covered including: vascular plants, lichens, mosses, liverworts, fungi, myxomycetes, macroalgae, and diatoms. Meise Botanic Garden is dedicated to digitally unlock these precious and unique botanical collections.</para><para>The Meise Botanic Garden Data Management Plan can be found at https://doi.org/10.3897/rio.10.e124288.</para>

<para>Ants are a vital component of terrestrial ecosystems due to their involvement in ecological processes and interactions, but some invasive alien species can also have detrimental effects to the environment and socioeconomic parameters. The ant biodiversity of Cyprus has been sporadically documented with recent efforts pooling information and resources for a more holistic approach. This dataset includes all published records of ants collected from the island of Cyprus, including records of native, endemic and alien species in order to better map their distribution and spatiotemporal patterns of observation. This dynamic dataset supports species distribution maps created on the “Ants of Cyprus website” (https://sites.google.com/view/ants-of-cyprus), is designed for use by the scientific community, conservation officers, and the wider public and it will be regularly updated as new information and data are generated.</para>

<para>Lepidoptera are a key component of biodiversity and are recognised as important pollinators. This dataset includes 298 occurrence records of butterflies and macro-moths from the Akrotiri peninsula, Cyprus (Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri and Dekelia). In total, 143 species of Lepidopteran were recorded, including two endemic butterfly species Hipparchia cypriensis (Holik, 1949) and Maniola cypricola (Graves, 1928), as well as five endemic macro-moth species Agrotis sabine Brandstetter, 2010, Ammoconia aholai Fibiger, 1996, Dyscia simplicaria Rebel, 1939, Eumannia arenbergeri Hausmann, 1995, and Selidosema tamsi Rebel, 1939. Euplagia quadripunctaria (Poda, 1761), a priority and Annex II species of the Habitats Directive was sampled within the designated Special Area of Conservation of Akrotiri peninsula. Butterflies were recorded using the line transect method, and moths were sampled using light traps, allowing the creation of an inventory of the Lepidoptera fauna of this ecologically important and biodiversity rich site.</para>
